Traveller Streaming Charity Event

On May 1st from 7-11 pm Eastern, you can watch a unique charity event. We are running a streaming game in support of the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation. We want to bring awareness to these cancers that, on average, take five years to diagnose properly. By that time, many patients have suffered terribly. My wife was first diagnosed after five years of suffering ever more frequent, debilitating pain. The kind of pain that took the breath out of her, came from nowhere, and doubled her over in agony. It was heartbreaking to watch and having no ability to help her or even know what was going on. And we tried. Years of doctor and specialist visits. MRIs. Restricting diets. Nothing seemed to work.

Finally, one night, she told me to take her to the emergency room, and she told me in all seriousness she thought was going to die. A surgeon who knew what he was looking for correctly diagnosed a two-and-half centimeter carcinoid in her small intestine that had finally resulted in full blockage.

My wife is, in many ways, a textbook case of suffering, misdiagnosis, diagnosis, and surgeries. While the news is good in that she’s expected to live a long, fairly normal life, it nonetheless altered her life’s trajectory, and she required a more invasive surgery several years later that altered her life even more. Perhaps if others had been aware of carcinoids/NETs, an earlier diagnosis might have resulted in a better outcome. Steve Jobs and Aretha Franklin, both of whom eventually passed due to complications from their NETs, are a couple of famous people who were diagnosed with one of these types of cancers.

So what is this streaming charity event? For those that don' know, a group of people are going to play a game much like Dungeons & Dragons, live over the internet for people to watch. The game is a science fiction game called Traveller and takes place in the far future. As the game is streaming, we will be asking for donations to the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation and tracking the progress much like a telethon. Viewers and donors can win prizes that help folks play role-playing games--things like dice, gift certificates, and other goodies--along with having an effect on the game as it is happening. Anyone can watch and donate!

For those already familiar with Traveller, I am running the Classic Traveller adventure Murder on Arcturus Station using the Mongoose 2E ruleset.

The streaming charity event is hosted by High Shelf Gaming and The Death Die Club. Join us on May Day (1 May 2020) from 7-11 PM Eastern to support a foundation bringing awareness to an oft misdiagnosed cancer. Game will be broadcast on the High Shelf Gaming Twitch channel.

Sponsors include Roll20, Immortal Nights, DriveThruRPG, Adventurer's Atlas, LegendKeeper, Cyborg Prime, and Ako Dice. AND Far Future Enterprises (aka, Marc Miller, the creator of Traveller himself).

And if you're interested, you can attend other events related to Traveller Day (May 1st) host by Cyborg Prime, which you can see here.

List of giveaways
  • 2 sets of Ako Dice
  • 7 coupon codes totaling $260 for Immortal Nights Tokens (I'm using his tokens for the charity game)

Thank you to all our sponsors!

Also, if you donate a $1, you can give a player or your choice a Boon or the referee (me) a Bane to hand out. $5 donations allow you to have one of our players, Rich, say something in Christopher Walken’s voice.

I want to express my profound thanks to the players--Hugo, Rich, Katrina, Dave, and Doug--High Shelf Gaming, the Death Die Club, and the Carcinoid Cancer Foundation for the support and giving of time. Their support has made this possible.

And a final big thank you to Far Future Enterprises (Marc Miller), Immortal Nights, The Adventurer's Atlas, Ako Dice, Cyborg Prime, Roll20, LegendKeeper, and DriveThruRPG.
