Etert Riffost--Traveller Character
I've rolled up Etert Riffost. Here's a screenshot of his character sheet.
Etert's UPP is: 556A73
Born and raised on Trin (A894A96-F) in the Trin's Veil subsection of the Spinward Marches sector. Etert grew up amongst the massive middle class on the planet. His father, Cor, rose to be a director in the Ling-Standard Products consumer products division, specializing in project management. His mother, Betz, served as an advisor to the mayor of Lancaster, the city the Riffost family lived. Betz eventually was elected as the attorney general for the city and was known as a tough prosecutor.
Etert grew up in a nurturing home. However, he tended to be a bit lazy in his studies, dreaming instead of heading to the stars. Gazing past the reflective debris ring of the moon that millennia ago was torn apart by gravitational forces, Etert dreamed of reaching beyond the system, beyond the Spinward Marches and, perhaps beyond the Imperium itself.
His laziness, however, meant that all the universities rejected his application except for a few minor colleges. To the dismay of his parents, he joined the Imperial Navy in the hopes of making his dream of traveling beyond Trin could be realized. Alas, the Navy assigned him to the 207th Fleet based out of Trin. While he escaped the planet, seeing the system only drove his dreams more.
During basic training, Etert chose the Flight specialization and obtained the following skills: pilot 0, vacc suit 0, athletics 0, gunner 0, mechanic 0, gun combat 0, small craft +1, and melee (blade) 1. Additionally, he received advanced training in electronics (sensors) 1.
For the rest of his career, Etert focused on Flight. In his first term, he improved his piloting skill and was given advanced training in a specialist field, again, focusing on electronics (sensors). Unfortunately, he was passed over for promotion this term.
In his second term he was promoted to sublieutenant. The navy thought so highly of him, that they insisted he stay another term. He improved and gained skills in small craft +1, leadership 1, flyer +1, and astrogation +1. However, during a bit of R&R on Trin, Etert encountered a group from the Heralds of Lamarckian Selection. Offended by their verbal attacks on people giving to a charity for wounded veterans, Etert lashed out. The leader of the group on Trin, Hasage Jor refused to back down. They nearly came to blows before police intervened. The police were all too happy to blame Jor for the escalation of tension and took him back to the precinct for questioning and general annoying. Jor has yet to forget and has indicated he was to make life miserable for Etert.
In his third term, Etert continued to improve: pilot (starship) +1, dex +1. However, as part of training, he was placed in low berth and was revived improperly. Because of nerve damage, he lost a point in dexterity. The Navy decided to muster him out, for which he was granted a nontransferable, lifetime membership in the exclusive Traveller’s Aid Society (TAS) along with improving his gun combat (slug) by 1. The Navy covered only 75% of the cost, leaving him a medical debt of cr1,250. However, he was able to restore his dexterity point.
Insistent that the Navy had wrongly mustered him out, Etert appealed the treatment and won, being returned to his former rank and status while keeping the mustering out benefits. In his fourth term, Etert increased his skills in pilot (starship) +1, and gunner +1, for which he received specialist training. He was also promoted to lieutenant, and the Navy was again so pleased with his performance, they required him to remain for another term. However, aging began to catch up with him and he lost some of his once lightning fast reflexes (dex -1).
In his fifth term, he continued improving his skills. Etert's commanding officer, Commander Jamie Highcliff, took an interest in his career and helped to get him promoted to Commander himself. Again, proving himself extremely capable, the Navy demanded another term of service, despite losing some more flexibility and endurance.
In his sixth and final term, Etert worked hard to counteract getting older, improving his endurance. However, a training exercise went wrong. Etert was in charge. However, when Etert ordered one of the light fighters to return to the Skimkish-Class Light Carrier, Andromeda's Star, Commodore Halsez Kelgir overrode him. Instead, Kelgir sent the fighter back out to engage in the war game. Unfortunately, the reason Etert ordered the fighter back was because it was experiencing a maneuver drive, intermittent failure. Back in the war game, the fighter suddenly thrust forward, ramming into a forward observation post, killing the pilot and 15 crew members in the post. Kelgir blamed Etert, who vigorously defended himself before the review board. The board found in Etert's favor.
However, Etert realized that his career was over. Kelgir, despite official reprimands, was too popular with the leadership and put the brakes on any further advancement. Etert retired from the Navy, gaining additional benefits, including additions to his education, ship shares, a weapon, and a yearly pension of cr14,000.
Using his benefits, the sudden inheritance from a minor nobel who was a relative, Etert invested in a Seeker mining ship. He fitted it out with computer software to handle the engineering tasks, knowing that he would need to spend regular time in ports for service. Over the objections of his now retired mother and father, Etert decided to find his way through the stars, living the dream he had so many years before.
