The INS Deimos
The INS Deimos, a Khumakirri-class Element cruiser, entered service in 1091 and first served in Aramis sector fleet duties. The Deimos' most significant action was a punitive raid on a pirate base in Llaekag system in 1100. The intelligence information was inaccurate, and the Deimos fell into a trap. Four destroyers and a dozen heavily armed, converted far traders went full out in an attempt to destroy the Deimos. She fended off the attacks, the captain concentrating fire on the destroyers, killing off three and chasing the fourth away along with the far traders. Damage was extensive--nearly catastrophic both structurally and crew-wise. The crew patched the Deimos up enough to jump back to Imperial space, where it received a proper repair job.
In 1101, it was refitted and assigned system fleet duties (though still attached to the Imperial Navy) in Corfu, where it saw negligible action, fulfilling its duties appropriately.
The Deimos was scheduled for decommissioning from the Imperial Navy in 1103 and set for sale when it was saved from that fate and tasked with serving as the flagship for a small flotilla of Imperial Navy ships targeted to the Foreven sector on a goodwill tour. The flotilla was eventually reduced to a single ship, the Deimos itself. The original fuel and missile pods were refitted with the standard exploration and intelligence pods. The command staff debated several of the pods suitable for its roles as a goodwill ambassador and intelligence collector and decided upon the exploration and intelligence pods. This means they only carry enough fuel for a jump-2, but given that Deimos does not need fleet mobility, this tradeoff in jump capacity for the capabilities of the exploration and intelligence pods was deemed acceptable. However, the ship has retained its full complement of armaments, an acknowledgment that it will be operating outside Imperial space where force may be necessary to defend itself with negligible odds for friendly assistance.
With its exploration and intelligence pods, the Deimos comes in at 25,000 tons, carrying a crew of 419 and an understrength company of Imperial Marines (90). In addition, the Deimos carries aboard Count Hertwig, the chief ambassador and diplomat assigned to the mission.
Because of the nature of the Goodwill Tour mission, the Deimos' staff and crew became a place for officers who never saw their career take off or stalled or earned ill will from superior officers and a place for young recruits or political-appointed navy crew members. As a result, the ship contains a fair number of troublemakers, disgruntled veterans, raw newbies, and entitled brats.
Overall, the ship is armed with the standard armament:
The captain also ensured additional supplies were stored in its cargo space. While the ship is expected to see limited contact and have frequent stops at at least minimal starwort facilities, the additional storage was considered prudent. Additional cargo space was fitted to store additional missiles and sandcaster barrels.
Overall, the ship is sound, though the crew needs some work to reach Imperial norms. The first system they will enter, the Krenshawz, should be a routine visit, one suited to putting the ship and crew through its paces and establishing what will be a long voyage through the Foreven sector, spreading Imperial goodwill and watching out for Zhodani influence.
